Every once in a while I'll run across a novel that manages to be romantic, engaging, emotionally charged and well-written... keeping me locked into a story that has all the elements of a truly entertaining read. In the novel Complicated Creatures that is definitely the case as Alexi Lawless weaves a story about Jack Roman falling down the proverbial rabbit hole when he falls for Sam Wyatt, a woman as seductive and alluring as she is mysterious and multi-layered.The well written novel has a sharp, lush and vivid writing style that makes you feel the motions of the characters, sucks you into their gravity and brings this story to life. There was one paragraph that really brought this fact into the foreground...
"One glance at the way he looked at her, and Sam knew exactly what he was. A lethal habit, she thought. The accelerator on a race car. A halo jump on a crystal clear day. The best possible rush with the worst possible consequences."
This is a novel that sweeps you up and takes you on a thrilling ride of romance, seduction, danger and an emotional roller coaster. It left me eager for more and desperate to see the journey Sam and Jack found themselves on next. Sam and Jack are two characters that manage to forge a connection with each other and with the reader, creating a compelling story that feels real and authentic as well as exciting and entertaining.
Overall, this was incredibly engaging and it was a promising start for the series. I'm definitely eager to read more.

Definitely not my usual read, but I’m really glad I took a chance on this one. Loved it. Couldn’t put it down loved it. I’m the kind of romance reader who really like to focus on the interpersonal relationships, and the love story, and well, yes, the sex too, but this was actually so much more. The love story is a big part of it, but it’s only one part out of so much going on. The leading lady is a bad-ass. Totally take charge an in control. Pretty much what you’re used to seeing with male leads. But Jack is equally hot and smart and man, is that guy tenacious. This is definitely not your typical relationship, and that in and of itself made the story really good for me.
As for the rest, I have to say it’s just as exciting. I'm the kind of reader where if a book takes too long to get to the juicy bits, I lose interest, but gosh there was just so much other stuff going on here! The cast of characters were really awesome too. And reading about how they operate as well as their relationships with each other was really cool.
Consensus Excellent read. This book is really well-written. I mean, the prose is fantastic. I almost can’t believe Alexi Lawless is a new author with the way she writes. (I kind of wonder if she’s another author using a pen name. Like… Lee Child or something?) The only thing that’s tough is the ending, but as long as you like a series, it’s cool. If you want an HEA, this is not a book you want to get going on because you won’t be able to put it down. I HAVE to know what’s going to happen next.
The first few pages had me a little nervous since the author introduces a lot of characters very quickly. That always worries me, because it makes me think the author is trying to overcome a lack of plot by throwing a lot of small stories into the mix. I shouldn't have worried.
One major complaint I have about romance books is that the female lead is weak. She may be strong outside the relationship, but she turns into a mound of pudding when the "big strong man" comes along. Sam is anything but weak - with or without Jack. The entire relationship is on her terms. That isn't to say Jack is the one who turns into pudding - he's also a strong, well-defined character. The secondary characters are also fleshed out, making them more than just words on a screen. Some (the two best friends) are so well-written that the reader knows almost as much about them as you do the two leads.
Another pet peeve about romance books is that the plot mostly ends when the romance begins. That is not the case here. In fact, the romance could be taken out, and this would still be a really good book. It still works well as a romance, but the non-romance is well done.
The one thing that really annoyed me is the cliffhanger ending. I was so hooked on how everything was taking off, and then I noticed I was at 98%. I'm off to buy book 2 now, but already know it ends in a cliffhanger as well. (The author says as much in an interview on the page for book 2.)
This was a five blazing stars spectacular story and I'm trying to figure out how I've missed reading this author so long when I've been whining and complaining about needing a good book with some substance. This is no cookie cutter romance following the same old worn out plot. THIS is a complicated and difficult romance with riviting, powerful characters and a storyline of international plots and danger. Truthfully, I think I hadn't discovered Alexi Lawless because this type of book isn't my typical "cup of tea" but boy was I wrong. I couldn't put it down. I am now reading book two of this series and if possible, it is even better, and having anxiety worrying about when I'll be able to get my hands on book 3.
