"Be in awe" writes Pete Hall, in "Downland Abbey" a poem in his recently released "How do you wash a chameleon?" I thought it was an apt description for this deceptively deep and beautiful volume of readable poems. In the literary world of preening peacocks shouting "Look at me," at the top of their insecure lungs, Peter Hall is the lone hawk on the highest branch, surveying the countryside beneath him. His poetry is sparsely simple, yet eloquent, the poetic version of Hemingway or Fitzgerald. I didn't expect "Betty and Me" his ode to a long lost Geography teacher, to bring a tear to my eye, former history teacher that I am, yet it did."Back to Work," "Grass in France" and "Recruits" are superb images of war from 3 very different perspectives. I only wish there were more. "April", "May" and "Skye" are evocative nature poems that will have you nodding your head in agreement. "Small Boys" catches the nostalgia of young trainspotters perfectly, without a hint of maudlin. "Blue wool coat" and "Honey" are just a few of the others that will move you. Finally, "Windy Day in Manchester" and "After the storm wet day" capture the English countryside, and Hall's nature poems alone are enough to make any poetry lover purr. He's got you hooked with those alone. But there is so much more! "I am Peter" and "Cuthbert" would both win prizes from me. And the phrase "just-wet sheep were fizzing with agitation" may be the most creative domestic animal description this old man has ever come across. Read these with gusto, and a dark pint if you will, then go back for a refill!Product details
