What do you get when you cross a hockey mom with the grim reaper?

Me, Lisa Carron. If being a depressed, frumpy, widowed mother of three wasn't bad enough, I just found out I'm a grim reaper. I know what you're thinking. Wow, that's kind of sexy and full of awesomeness. Hardly. Oh, and my clients? Stupid people. Like I don't get enough of that from the living.

Since Alaska is big and angels of death are few, I've been partnered with reaper extraordinaire, Nate Cramer. He's strong, silent, and way too good looking for my recently widowed state.Oh, and he reaps violent criminals, so that should be interesting.

Forget the danger and the hours of self-analysis it will take for me to find my reaper mojo. My biggest problem? Hiding it all from my overly attentive family and nosy neighbors. Now that's going to take a miracle.

To Catch Her Death The Grim Reality Series Book 1 edition by Boone Brux Jennifer Meyers Tina Winograd Literature Fiction eBooks

This book was so damn cute it hurt. It's the only book published in this series so far, and I had a little toddler tantrum when I realized I had to wait to keep reading. Note: this is a story told over several books, so there are plenty of plot threads that aren't tied up here. In particular, if you are used to romantic relationships being culminated in a single book, know that the main relationship here looks like it will grow more naturally over multiple books. So enjoy it -- don't rush through looking for the climax. (See what I did there?)

WHAT I LIKED
-----------------
- Quick and witty dialogue
- Main female character is full of real flaws - easy to identify with and laugh with
- The best friend, who I see as Dolly Parton from Steel Magnolias
- Gallows humor. I LOVE GALLOWS HUMOR, and this book does not disappoint
- Real kids. So many authors put kids in books but obviously haven't actually met kids in real life. I fell in love with this messy family right out the gate.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE
--------------------
- I wished the story moved a little faster, because I'm impatient
- There are some things that seemed obvious to me that the main character didn't pick up on. I felt like there were enough clues available to the character that she should have figured things out earlier.

If you like dark humor, real messy people, and wicked sarcasm, I highly recommend.

To Catch Her Death The Grim Reality Series Book 1 edition by Boone Brux Jennifer Meyers Tina Winograd Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I loved this book. Got down to reading it to kill time in between other heavier/longer books to get a break & BOY-O-BOY, this is such a fun book. Despite her down-to-earth outlook in life, our frumpy, dumpy, widow of 3 comes up to bat without knowing how to really bat. Took on the challenges & even with all the doubts, worries came through with a side of eating thrown in for good measure.

Having such a best friend in life is priceless & if only all of us had one like Vella. Total acceptance, no judgement & always there to help pick up the pieces & an ear to pour everything into.

Go ahead & read this as you won't regret it.
What does a widow with three children, living in Alaska, do when she needs a job? She becomes a grim reaper, of course. Lisa Carron's husband dies in a car accident and leaves very little money for his family to live on. Lisa is caught up in a convenience store holdout. With the help of Nate Cramer, she manages to cross the gunman's soul over after he's shot and killed by the store clerk. And thus begins Lisa's new career.

To Catch Her Death was certainly an imaginative tale. It's difficult to define the genre, as it's quite unique. Maybe paranormal comedy? Magical comedy? Author Boone Brux does include several elements in this book, which will undoubtedly make it appeal to a fairly wide variety of readers. I'd like to see the book undergo one final editing go around, as I noticed several glaring typos, which I found distracting. I didn't quite connect with the main character and her snarky, adolescent wisecracking ways. I thought at times it was a little overdone. However, To Catch Her Death definitely has a great deal of potential. The author can certainly build upon this book's premise and go off in many different directions - and after all, that makes for a great book series.

If you're looking for something short and out of the ordinary, I'd recommend To Catch Her Death. I'll be looking for future sequels.
This book held that special magic for me; intelligent and entertaining story, coupled with strong, sympathetic, whitty, adult heroine. Boone Brux strategically leaves tantalizing "bread crumbs" throughout the book for events that are resolved later as well as hooking the reader into wanting more in the form of future stories.

Lisa Carron, the heroine in question, is a widowed mom trying to put her life back together after her husband's tragic death and leaving his family in financial straits. Ms Brux was able to capture the woman next door in her Lisa character. Someone the reader can imagine living next door and being friends with.

Lisa is accidentally introduced into the world of grim reaping and into the life of sexy grim reaper Nate Cramer. Other characters introduced include a "porter" called Hal, best friend Vella, and reaper colleagues. For those who are fans of the demon, Al, in the Rachel Morgan series, they will absolutely love Hal.

Beyond the story of Lisa becoming a reaper is a larger story of something disturbing but significant about to happen in the land of the dead, involving hell. The unresolved stories of reaping Kelly and Nuk, Jeff's possible infidelity, Nate and Willow's animosity, Hal as Lisa's death contact, and of course the significance of Lisa's raven familiar leaves the reader excited for more to come in the series. Can't wait for the next in the series.
This was a fun read! Albeit a short one. It's the first book in a proposed series, and after finishing it, I bought the second right away. (I will mention that the second is about twice as long, for half the cost of this intro, but I think I got this one for free at one point.)

During a botched gas station robbery, Lisa- widowed mother of 3- discovers that she is a grim reaper. While natural ability is required, it is also a job with promotion potential, benefits, and bonuses, all of which she needs. So...

Brux has a light touch, and Lisa- and the secondary characters- come alive, even minor ones. Her BFF is a hoot, and apparently the grim reaper industry is full of hunky guys; who knew?

This novel is definitely the set-up for the series. No plots really got resolved, though many tempting dangling hooks were scattered.; it mainly introduces the cast of characters and the world, and gets Lisa out of her mourning funk and engaging with the world again.

If you like paranormal themes in general, but are bored with vamps and weres, you may enjoy this light-hearted series.
